Where are we?

Sandy – Where are we?

Sandy lies approximately 50 miles north of London, on the Great North Road (A1 London to Edinburgh trunk road). The town has been “by-passed” for many years. An A1(M) upgrade is promised at some point in the future (perhaps in the next 30 years – spending cuts permitting). The net result is that Beeston, south of Sandy, has been divided since the A1 dualling in the late 1970’s.

Developments since the Millennium include over 900 new homes to the north of Sandy, just off the A1. This on land once owned by local farmers and the Town Council. The new developments are called “Fallow Field”, and “St Ivel Park” .Mainly 3 and 4 bed-roomed properties built by Twigden, Laing, Barratt and Wimpey. A new road was constructed on the edge of the estate, which links the industrial area to the A1, as well as being a  route into the town centre for the new “mini-town”.

Recently:

Currently (2016), the new estates are served around the edges by several bus services, including Centrebus, Herberts and Stagecoach. Since May 2015, Stagecoach has been running a revised route, essentially cutting out part of the town to the northern end of St Neots Road, with Herberts providing a ‘Town’ service, which has only partially solved the problem. Now, after lengthy consultations, the Stagecoach route will be revised again, to restore the service more or less to what it was for more than thirty years before the 2015 changes. the return of a ‘normal’ service is anticipated to commence from mid November 2016. Once restored, the Herberts town service will cease. Centrebus routes serve villages around the Sandy area and are  unaffected (at present). Details of local transport services are in our ‘Local Information pages.
